The name was fitting. She was wild and uncaring, and unaware of sexuality. Just as one should be at her age. The bravado made her smile, such a confidence in her, she almost feared for the girl when she did finally develop. Elana wondered internally whether this girl got enough attention at home, if that was why she seemed to need a reputation.
“It’s nice to meet you, Penny.” Releasing her smaller hand, Elana tucked herself back into the comfortable cushions, wrapping her arms around herself.
“Have you gotten into either of the other common rooms yet?”

Huh. No response. Penny wondered whether this girl thought acting like she didn't know who people were made her cool or something. That wasn't a very Hufflepuff thing to do, though. It was more like... well, anyone in any other house. Hufflepuffs tended to be more genuine. She supposed there was always an exception to the rule, though.
Nice to meet her, too. Well, Penny knew that was a lie, but not a deliberate one. It was just one of those things that came out of people's mouths without them even thinking about it. Elana hadn't acted like it was nice to meet her until she was sure she wasn't going to get into trouble. The idea made Penny snort, and she didn't bother to hide that. Like anyone cared what happened in this school anymore.
"I decided to start with this one," she said. "I mean, Hufflepuff is the hardest common room to get into. I'm not much for classes but I know how to find things out when they're worth knowing."

Elana wasn’t sure if the girl was stupid, lying, or thought she herself was stupid. Penny was a Ravenclaw, so sure as hell she wasn’t stupid, so it had to be one of the latter. A small frown twisted at the edges of her lips as she assessed the girl in silence. No, it was none of these things. She was a people pleaser, a suck up.
“Everyone knows the house entrances reflect the intelligence of their members. A riddle for you, a password for the Gryffindors and Slytherins, and for us… tap the barrel. Hardly the most difficult.” Normally pleasant and chipper, she surprised herself with her irritable tone.
With a long sigh, she attempted to relax herself. “Sorry.. it’s been a long day.” Her fingers gave a painful throb as if to agree.

Penny scowled at Elena's tone, not to mention her words, but then her eyes lit up. Usually, Penny kept what she knew close to her chest, but there was nothing to be lost from educating this girl (a sixth year! She should have known better). Besides, it was all things everyone else knew anyway.
"I cannot believe you don't know," she said. "The Hufflepuff common room has never been broken into. Why'd you think I was even trying? And I failed; had to get you to help me."
"And that riddle? It's not difficult, you just have to be able to persuade the doorknocker that your answer makes sense. It's like bullshitting in an essay," she explained easily.
Oh, well she had said she'd help the girl get into Ravenclaw if she wanted to...
"Seriously, I wanted to be in Hufflepuff. It's the best house."

Maybe she had[/read that somewhere. It didn’t seem as obvious as Penny made it out to be, and she suspected getting doused in vinegar would keep anyone from trying more then once. As Elana thawed by the fire, so did her attitude, an she even found a genuine laugh to give the girl.
“No, you’re definitely Ravenclaw. Too smart for your own good.” And pretty, which she could use to her advantage, too. Elana by comparison, had always been fairly mediocre in her studies, and had never thought herself to be anything to write home about. “But you do look good in yellow and black.” She added with a grin, her exhaustion giving in to a second wind.
“Truth be told, I wanted to be in Ravenclaw, like my mother and father. Sorting hat knows best, though, I suppose.” Grabbing a bowl of wiggling gummy worms, She pulled he one trying to fling it’s self over and bit it in half, offering them with a gesture to Penny.

Penny laughed at the girl's assessment, then frowned. It sounded like a compliment, but it could have been an insult.
"Don't underestimate yourself. I think you've got a bit of Ravenclaw yourself. Or at least Slytherin," she said. "Anyhow, it's not all about being smart. They say the hat takes what you want into account and then we end up with losers like Roberts, who worship facts, in our house. But like, I don't think he's that smart really."
