Down one of the empty corridors that no one seemed to know where it lead to, sat Dale. The passage was blocked off by an obnoxious neon orange colored tape propped up by equally obnoxious orange traffic comes that muggles use. At the center of it all sat Dale in a rickety lawn chair with a book in his lap and his wand clutched tightly under his fist. It was the best he could do at so late notice.
Dale had been given very specific instructions from the headmaster himself. DO NOT under any circumstances allow any student to walk down this corridor. OR ELSE. What Dale read that as was simply 'I entrust you Dale, you are the only hope to this society within Hogwarts to keep law and order, your righteous sense of right and wrong and unwavering ability to uphold it is commendable and it should come as no surprise that I have chosen you for this noble job.' his cheeks flushed a slight crimson color as he envisioned those very words that the headmaster did not in any shape or form state, but to Dale it felt real enough.
Of course the headmaster would choose me. There really are no better candidates out there. He mused to himself as he tried to focus on the words on the page but it was kinda hard to do when his eyes shot up every other word to make sure no one slipped past him. Not like they could. The corridor was just wide enough for him to stretch his hands to the side. He'd risk his life if he had to.

Marian casually sauntered towards her goal, a corridor ,if what she had heard was correct, that the student body was forbidden to enter. How could she let something like that go unexplored? It was practically begging to have its secrets unraveled, maybe it led to some dangerous location outside the school? Or perhaps a forgotten room filled with old books or other curiosities. She felt practically giddy thinking about the possibilities.
As she rounded the corner and entered the passage in question she saw her fellow Ravenclaw Dale sitting on the floor, surrounded by orange tape and cones. He looked ridiculous, and Marian had a hard time keeping herself from laughing. Still it did present a problem as it seemed sneaking down the corridor just got much more difficult. At the moment he had his head stuck in a book, so perhaps she could sneak by? No he hear her approach... Just as she started contemplating the pros and cons of stunning him with a spell his eyes shot up from the book and their eyes met.
"Ah, I didn't expect anyone to be here.." Marian laughed lightly, and quirked a small smile at Dale. "I don't suppose you'd be willing to pretend like I'm not here?" Probably not, but it was worth trying.

Why am I not surprised to see you here?
Of course you wouldn't he replied to himself dully. Marian was two years his senior but he'd bumped paths with her enough to familiarize himself with the type of hooligans of his house. The ridiculous rule breakers who bled of Gryffindor stink that for some reason or the other ended up in Ravenclaw. An unfortunate addition. There was very little good Marian added to the house to balance the negatives she added. If it were not for her incessant desire to pry where she did not belong, he wouldn't have even associated with her this long.
"I don't suppose you'd be willing to pretend like I'm not here?
He heard her say and couldn't help but smile, It was almost amusing that she didn't know him as well as he'd gotten to know her. She was so delusional, so out of it, it made him wanna laugh. But he'd humor her. Shutting his book firmly, he set it aside and leaned forward, his wand still perched in his hand although not directly at her.. at least for now.
"Depends. Suppose I pretend you weren't here. Then what? Just let you pass?" he suggested, though the suggestion itself oozed with sarcasm. As if In no sane world would that ever happen under his roof. Nope.

Why of all people did it have to be Dale that was guarding this passageway. He was waaay to attached to rules for his own good, and she had no dirt on him that she could use to get her way. Marian casually moved her right hand into her pocket, ready to grab her wand if it came to it. She was confident that she could win a duel, she had two years on the guy after all and thereby knew more spells.
She quirked and eyebrow at the sarcasm, and snorted lightly. Oh, two can play that game, she thought gleefully. Who knows, maybe she could annoy him into deciding it was more trouble than it was worth trying to stop her. "Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit you know?" She singsonged, not answering his question. "You should be ashamed of yourself."
She moved closer and made to duck under the tape that blocked the passageway, a cheeky grin on her face. "Not only that but you are stopping your fellow Ravenclaw from learning something new, shouldn't trying to obtain knowledge be applauded?" Now she was just making fun of him, as she knew her arguments wouldn't really persuade him to change his opinion, but it would be fun to try and rile him up by citing their house's traits of wit and learning. Probably even more so since she was one of the Ravenclaws that didn't care much for schoolwork, and therefore had rather abysmal grades in those subjects that couldn't hold her interest.
"Aren't you the least bit curious?" She said, before continuing in her best Darth Vader impression. "Join me. Give yourself to the dark side" She didn't know if Dale was muggleborn or not, but she hoped her joke wouldn't be wasted on him.

Dale watched Marian carefully, taking careful not of how she inched closer and closer just toeing the line. He could feel the vein on the side of his head pulse violently, but he kept his cool for the most part, as cool as one complete and totally uptight Ravenclaw could. His teeth were clenched, his eyes had a glazed almost manic look. OKAY So Dale couldn't really look 'calm' in the normal sense of the definition, but he was as calm as his normal self could get, which meant he wasn't foaming at the mouth and raving mad at the ridiculous indecency of it all.
Yeah you would know, wouldn't you he thought to himself bitterly as she taunted him. But he wasn't about to break his focus yet, and just as she went to make a break for under the tape he made a leap out of his seat, cutting across her just in time and planting a rather firm outstretched hand against the wall, acting as a barrier in addition to the orange tape.
"---Not all types of knowledge are worth applause. I wouldn't call Voldemorts 'experiment' in the chambers something worth noting.." First and foremost it was complete and totally against all regulations set by standards of the ministry against cross-breeding species. And second, the less offensive, was the fact that someone died from it. But really... the most important lesson learned from that tidbit of history was that the rules were broken under the sacred house of Hogwarts and from a student no less. Dale's eyes narrowed at her suggestion. He didn't get the reference, muggleborn or not, he'd never been one for 'classics'.
Was he curious?
"no." he added rather curtly hoping that this would end all the banter and attempts to bypass him, but he knew better. It was going to be a loooong day. I won't disappoint you Headmaster he thought rather valiantly, prepared to fight tooth and nail if necessary to keep her out.

She never got past the tape as Dale moved to block her way, and Marian bit back a sigh. Still it was fun poking fun at him, he looked like he was this far from losing his temper. Or having a nervous breakdown. You could never tell with these neurotic types. Marian brushed a stray lock of hair from her face, and looked bemused as he opened his mouth to speak. His words however got her attention, and she shifted from her casual slouch to standing almost ramrod straight, all playfullness gone. Voldemort? That.. changed things.
"Are you telling me that this passageway leads to a chamber containing notes on experiments performed by that bastard, and the headmaster set a 4th year to guard it." She asked incredulously. She hadn't thought this passage would lead to anything dangerous, a notion only strengthened by the fact that a 14 year old was guarding it. Now she wasn't certain if her curiosity had been piqued even more, or if this was one thing she was better off leaving alone. No, ignorance never did anyone any favors.
An uncharacteristically serious frown settled on her face as she chewed on her lower lip. "What do you know about all this?" She wanted to know, needed to know if there was anything dangerous inside the castle. This was just one more mystery of many in this school, and she was determined to solve them all. This headmasters of their deserved a closer look as well, and she made a mental note to focus more of her efforts there.
Her eyes shone with determination as she stared down the younger student-

"You mean a noble fourth year who has morals, and values right and wrong?" he corrected her through gritted teeth, offended that she would assume he was a liability due to age alone. There was no better candidate for the job than Dale himself. If not for his willingness to stand for the law, it was also his unwavering desire to please authority figures that put him in the perfect position to accept such a task. Truth be told, he hadn't exactly put much thought into what he was guarding, but now that she'd mentioned it... He grinned to himself stupidly, relishing in the idea that the headmaster trusted him, Dale Roberts, to guard Hogwarts biggest secrets.
Tears began to swell in his eyes, he'd almost forgotten what he was dealing with, until she broke off his train of thought to push more questions.
But the tables were turned. And like they said, knowledge was power, and right now he was at about a ten. Unlike Marian he didn't need to uncover secrets that were barred from studies. Just knowing that he was put into a position to stop people from getting there was a treat in itself.
"More than you'll ever know." he added, with a new sense of arrogance. There would be statues erected in his name. DALE the valiant guardsman. No.. DALE the defender of justice and righteousness. Still missing something... DALE--- KING OF HOGWARTS. better... so much better.. He could hear them chanting his name loud and proud, and this pathetic insolent fool Marian at her knees, bowed before him, begging for forgiveness. never MWAHAHAHAH.. ha...
wait. the mission!
"Now move along, I'd hate to have to report you to Professor James" Lies. He loved reporting students, it had to be his second favorite hobby. The first of course, was butting into peoples business and putting out things before they even got started.

This kid was ridiculous, utterly, absolutely ridiculous. Really, who even used the word 'noble' to describe themselves anymore? He couldn't have many friends with an attitude like that, perhaps that explained why he had the time to sit and guard a hallway in case someone decided to check it out. Though she felt a bit insulted that he insinuated she didn't have any morals. Perhaps her morals were loser than some, but Marian still considered herself a good person. "I don't know about noble, but you're certainly a stick in the mud." She snorted, before continuing. "What are you gonna do the day you learn that just because it's in the rules or the law that doesn't make it automatically right?" Which happened too often, especially when people in power wanted to cover up their dirty little secrets.
She raised an eyebrow at his vague answer. 'More than you'll ever know' was an annoying thing to hear, and her irritation washed away all seriousness that had previously dominated. "You know nothing at all then", She shot back snidely. Why was she even bantering with this guy, it was a waste of time. His arrogance was seriously wearing on her patience.
The threat of detention did nothing to deter her, in fact that particular threat had stopped working in her 3rd year. While she didn't relish spending time in detention, she had long since decided that it was an acceptable cost to satisfy her curiosity. Not to mention she often met interesting people during detention.
"Go ahead, report me. I couldn't care less, what I do care about however is getting past you." She said as she moved to shove him out of the way. She didn't want to get in a fight, but she'd try to see how far she could push this guy.

Dale had heard a lot of these kinds of things in his entire life, even before Hogwarts that just hearing them gave him a sense of pride. A stick in the mud. It certainly wasn't an easy task but to hear that he hadn't strayed from his tenets was enough for him. But he could tell she was escalating soon. Step one with these situations began as mere banter the whole 'can I, won't you, why not..' which then eventually led to step two, charging ahead. But he'd already been two steps ahead of her, Plotting what to do when she'd ignore him. A sticky charm perhaps? Oh yes.. yes yes indeed. It'd be like killing two birds with one stone, she'd be obstructed from going further, but she'd also be a warning sign for any others who might dare to pass. A sign that said 'DON'T BE LIKE ME, or DALE will completely and totally mess you up... and keep you glued here for hours...' fwaahahahaa. Dale kept his wand trained down at her feet in a very non suspicious way, he even kept his eyes focused on her boredly but his mind raced with the incantation, prepared to utter it at the very last moment, after all, wandwork in the corridors was completely and totally against the rules and he didn't want to perform it until absolutely necessary. But he didn't expect her to get all aggressive and as she shoved him out of the way, he'd lost his aim "Viscavi Cantio" he mumbled almost inaudibly, unaware he'd even missed his target and got her hand instead. But as she kept moving he assumed he'd just uttered the wrong spell, desperate to stop her plight he reached forward to grab her hand "Not so fast---" he latched onto her hand to tug her back. He dropped her hand almost as quickly as he grabbed it. But... she was still connected, as if they were... glued. well... that was awkward. "I.... I'll never let you go!" he stammered to cover up the reason they were holding hands, but more so that he messed up big time. If only she knew how true that was. ( OOC: Hope you don't mind!!!! I kinda sorta power played you... I'll change it if its too much!)

Marian blessed her timing, as Dale chose to try and curse her at the exact moment she pushed him out of the way. She didn't know what he had been trying to do, but as she felt no adverse effect she concluded he must have missed her. However that wasn't all, and as she made to move down the hallway Dale grabbed her hand and stopped her in her tracks. "Why, I never knew you felt this way about me." She told him and tried to shake off his grip, but his hand was like glued to hers. "Sorry kid, you're cute and all, but not exactly what I'm looking for in a boyfriend."
It seemed like no matter how much she tried to pry him off he wouldn't let go, and she had to wonder how this skinny kid could be this strong. Had he actually managed to hit her with his spell? She hadn't really focused on what he had been saying, and now she racked her brain to see if she could remember exactly which spell he had tried to cast.
Though maybe she could use this to her advantage, she couldn't have him trying to curse her again. This up-close she wouldn't be able to manage to draw her wand and curse him before could react, but he probably wouldn't expect her to try and disarm him manually. With that thought she yanked Dale towards her hoping to throw him off balance, before swiftly reaching out with her other hand to try and snatch away his wand while he was distracted.
"Weren't you all about rules? Yet here you are breaking one of them, trying to cast magic in the hallways." She tsked, before continuing. "How hypocritical of you."
OOC: I don't mind at all ;) This looks like it's going to be a lot of fun

Dale gritted his teeth as she tried to pry herself from him, he had to keep himself from giving away the fact that he was not remotely attracted to her but really just attached to her due to his own errors. Somebody sure was egotistical. But no amount of keeping 'calm' could hide the fact that they were virtually inseparable. You'd think a Ravenclaw would figure that out sooner he thought to himself bitterly as he dealt with her wiggling and tugging her arm, he hadn't of course ,expected her to use that as a weapon, so when she tugged her hand back rather viciously he felt himself plunge forward, his head headbutting against her noggin as she grabbed hold of his wand.
"Special circumstances would allow wand-work in the hallways. I would call upholding my rights as a wizard as one of them." he added rather dramatically, too distracted with keeping his wand to focus on what exactly he was saying. His head throbbed violently from the collision but that never seemed to deter her
"Now give... me... my.... wand.......back!" he tugged with each word uttered, Marian was a lot stronger than he'd imagined. He wondered why it was that she never played on the quidditch team, perhaps they wouldn't have fared out so poorly each term if she did.

Dale had definitely hit her with some kind of spell, she concluded sourly as her struggles to loosen him proved to be in vain. Probably some sort of sticking charm, or something like that. However before she could pursue that line of thought further she set her plan in motion to acquire Dale's wand, and to her satisfaction it worked. Though perhaps she should have done something else, as she was now in considerable pain after Dale smacked his head into her own. She cursed loudly at the unexpected collision, and had any teachers been around she would have probably lost points for her choice of words. Her nose throbbed in pain, and she could feel something hot slowly trickling down from her nose. Of course I'd get a nosebleed, she thought in irritation through the pain, don't think my nose is broken though.. I hope.
Still she couldn't let her nose distract her for long, as it seemed Dale wasn't about to let go of his wand without a fight. His comment didn't make much sense, and she grunted out a come-back of her own. "Which part of stopping me is protecting your right as a wizard?"
She kept her grip firm as he tired to tug his wand back, and she waited until he had stopped speaking to try and rip it out of his hand with a violent tug of her own. "I don't think so, what's to say you wont try to hit me with another spell? I'll bet my wand you're the reason why we're currently stuck to each other so clearly you can't be trusted with one." She retorted, and grimaced as some of the blood trickling down from her nose got in her mouth. The sharp taste of iron was far from pleasant. Merlin, she probably looked like a mess right now.
"I propose a truce, put down your wand and I'll draw my own and cast a counter-spell that'll hopefully fix your mess." She said, hoping her tone came across as reasonable. "I promise not to do anything else other than get us unstuck."

"Fair enough..." he agreed and lowered his wand slowly until it was nestled right beside him, he wasn't about to just pocket it like he was over it. Noo sirreee. Dale wasn't afraid of Marian jinxing him, although it wasn't exactly what he'd call 'pleasant', what worried him more was her scurrying past him. He'd had nightmares about what it would be like to have detention with the headmaster, nightmares that felt so real it shook him. He'd still not realized he'd actually had a real detention before because it was just something his brain purposefully blocked out, a sort of coping mechanism of sorts. But he remembered the dream, and he could swear Annabelle hated him by the way she looked at him, though he couldn't understand why.
"Seeing that you promised to 'not do anything else', your words exactly, I trust you'll be on your way" he repeated, manipulating her words to suit his needs, hey! She walked right into that. Besides.. he had to stake his claim before she tried one over on him.
Dale wiggled his fingers, they'd been stuck now for almost five minutes and his palms already felt clammy against Marians soft cold hands. "Well any day now. I think my fingers are gonna freeze off" he added impatiently, though strangely enough he didn't seem that much bothered by her hands, they were kind of nice if he could allow himself to admit it, which he wouldn't.

She sighed as Dale still refused to part with his wand, but she supposed that this was the best she was going to get. Slowly she drew her own wand from her pocket, and inspected their joined hands. A general counter-charm should probably solve the problem nicely. "Mmm yeah no, nice try though. I asked you to put down your wand, not lower it." She pointed out to him, before continuing. "So if you're not going to follow the truce to the letter, I don't see why I have to." Not that she would have left so easily anyway. Though maybe she should consider making a strategic retreat, it was clear she wasn't going to make much progress today. She was loath to admit defeat though.
"Patience my young padawan" Marian intoned calmly, moving even slower out of pure spite. "And my hands aren't cold, yours are just too warm." Lies, her hands were always cold, and she delighted in startling her friends by putting her cold hands down their backs but she wasn't going to tell Dale that. "Now hold still, Finite Incantatum." The counter-spell worked like a charm, and soon their hands were free. It had been nice leeching Dale's warmth while it lasted, but she was relieved to have her hand back though.
This wasn't the first magical accident she had been in and certainly not the worst, so she should probably just ignore that the last five minutes happened. Still this was a golden opportunity, and she couldn't resist to rub Dale's mistake in his face. "Now what have we learned about casting spells in the hallway?" She wagged a finger in mock admonishment. Without really thinking she dragged her hand down her face in false exasperation, consequently smearing blood over her cheeks. She probably looked like she'd gotten in a fight, which wasn't false per say but not true either. "Ah shit, I had forgotten about that. Am I still bleeding?"

"is this NOT low enough?!" he barked at her ridiculous demands, his wand was already at hip level. If she thought he was going to just put his wand down on the dirty stinking floor, she had another thing coming for her. germs.. rats... whatever else.. he shivered at the thought, having never been one for messes and the like. Call it OCD but that, my friend, is no illness. Dale watched bitterly as the 6th year worked her magic and freed them rather easily. He wiped his sweaty palm against the side of his pants leg. yeah yeah very impressive... something a first year could do he grumbled to himself, though really he felt foolish for not thinking of that one soon enough.
"Now what have we learned about casting spells in the hallway?" his ears burned as she taunted him.
"alright enough of that, if you'd only listened I wouldn't have had to hex you in the first pla---" he began but was immediately cut off as she brushed her blood up all over her face. She really did look like a victim of a vicious fight... if somebody walked by and saw them... well... one could make assumptions of course, none that were true.
"hold still" he grunted, desperate to remedy the situation before it got worse. He stepped up to her so they were barely an inch apart, he hesitated for a moment given the closeness but he knew of no better way than this, and with that in mind he moved his hand to her nose and gently pinched her nostrils with his thumb and index finger, with his other hand he steadied her head forward slightly, and caught her eye for a moment before looking away
"now breathe through your mouth or don't breathe.. " perhaps they'd be better off if she did stop breathing.. temporarily of course... unless...
