Yussss. The sun was shining, the birdies were singing and his demon of a sister was nowhere to be seen. This day might actually be a good one. The kissing booth was right there on the road into the village. Aaron ran his fingers through the just-trimmed hair at the base of his skull. He'd known they were planning one, of course. Had even been asked to volunteer by someone who'd obviously been told to ask everyone in the common room (otherwise why would they ask him?). So it wasn't like this was a surprise, he'd just been expecting to avoid walking past it. But like, it wasn't just the booth. Everyone was there. It would have been weird to just keep walking like there was nothing to see. So, reluctantly, Aaron hovered nearby, rummaging in his pockets for a coin. Noah looked too much like Ana, so he snaked his hand between Judge and the tilted jar to drop his two sickles into it. "Pucker up, Liz."

Whoever said boys were easier were horrid liars. There was nothing easy about any of the boys at Hogwarts. Except maybe Tobias Åstrōm, and he was easy in a way Lachlan wasn't interested in. Jasper didn't sound like he was pleased. He sounded, not irritated, but kind of bored. Like he was only talking to Lachlan out of politeness. Of course that's what he was doing. Lachlan didn't know why he thought Jasper would like him any better in person than he did in writing. He ought to have stuck to flirtatious owls. "I, um, fine." Lachlan kicked at the turf, for want of anything else to do.

Like a flip of a coin, Lachlan's demeanor was suddenly dampened and submissive. Jasper had seen him in class before, the way he spoke to other people. It wasn't really like this. Or maybe he was just making assumptions. Annoyance was really the only way to describe how he felt way back when Tobias and Lachlan had some sort of idle spat in Divination, but at the same time, it was that sort of coy rudeness that Jasper tended to admire in someone. Watching someone who so confidently barked back at Jasper's quips, who clearly had some sort of backbone, mumble "I'm fine"? Either Jasper did something wrong, or perhaps the guy liked him more than he thought. He rubbed his cheek, in another attempt to rub the whiskers away. It was a fruitless endeavor. This was painful. But all Jasper could really do is push down his embarrassment. Jasper showed himself to be domineering, flirty. That's what he was. Not an embarrassed, wilting flower in kitty makeup. He clapped his hand to his cup, swallowed those trivial feelings down and let it simmer in his stomach. "Just fine? What a shame. We should do something to fix that, don't you think?" Jasper began, a genuine smile forming this time, with no thoughts plaguing him of how he must look in that moment. "Are you any good at tossing rings?" He added, pointing at the booth beside him, "I was thinking of trying."

This was just getting more and more awkward. Lachlan could deal with Jasper being bored. His letters often sounded bored, in that way that made Lachlan think he was probably not nearly as bored as he was trying to seem. But happy, kind? Lachlan wasn't ready for that. Oh it was true that he disliked it when Jasper got too uppity. He hated that the other boy thought he was oh-so-clever and Lachlan was certain that part of that was courtesy of being a Ravenclaw. But the majority was probably just ego. And he hated when Jasper made assumptions about his motivations. They were more often wrong than not. And then there was his conviction, probably unconscious, that everyone wanted him. There was nothing attractive about that. But he liked that it was all just laid out there. Or it had been. He liked the thorny person who argued with him and who he had to tell to back off. He'd become nervous upon seeing Jasper, but he'd also expected to be made fun of for the sudden attack of shyness. "Don't know how you can fix being fine," Lachlan said. "Those games are always fixed in the muggle world. Bet this one's covered in charms, too."
