Sticking her nose where it doesn't belong

The great hall was mostly empty this early in the morning, most of the students wouldn't be up for another hour or so. Marian, however wasn't one of these. Instead she sat at the Ravenclaw table, various books spread out in front of her, and writing furiously in a notebook filled with newspaper clippings, photos and hastily scribbled notes. Her eyes had dark circles underneath them, a result of having gone more than 24 hours without sleep. She couldn't sleep though, not when she had to figure out how to make the spell she wanted.
Marian frowned as she read the passage of a muggle science book again, trying to figure out how she could make a spell that would let her wand emit UV-light. Such a spell would really come in handy as it would make blood and various other bodily fluids light up if there was even trace amounts present, at least that was how she understood it from one of the other books laying on the table, this one on muggle CSI methods. She grumbled as she reached towards her coffee cup (her sixth one this morning), and made another note.
"Alright, let's try this. Hyacinthum lux" She muttered and waved her wand, all she got however was a some blue smoke, which if she squinted seemed to emit some kind of glow. With a sigh she let her head impact painfully with the table, and she let out a frustrated groan. What had possessed her to think trying to create a new spell was a good idea? Mindlessly she groped around for her coffee, the only thing that seemed to keep her going at this point. At this point she was so tired that she probably wouldn't notice if anyone had sat right down beside her.

Waking up early was a common occurrence for Davina. She didn't bother making sure she had enough sleep; her body just knew when she'd rested enough and woke up on its own. Most of the time she was a deep sleeper, but last night was in her dorm room which had made it difficult to fall asleep in the first place. The Slytherin had given up and had refreshed herself with a long shower, and decided she might as well get started with the day. It was still a few hours before classes started so she had time to take things at her own pace.
Making her way towards the Great Hall, she kind of enjoyed the silence in the corridor. It almost felt like she had the whole castle to herself. She wondered if this is how people who actually owned castles felt like. Davina wouldn't mind having a castle of her own. Maybe it was something to look into after graduation.
The Great Hall was almost empty, save the one blonde head piercing the dimness in the large room. Recognizing the Ravenclaw, Davina made her way towards her, immediately curious after the array of books and papers surrounding Marian. It wasn't the first time Davina had seen the older student in sch a state, though never at this hour. Davina actually admired Marian's research ethic and investigative spirit. The point to which she took herself was worrisome sometimes, but no one could ever say Marian wasn't passionate. Taking a seat next to Marian, Davina jumped slightly when her head connected with the solid wood table hard. The Slytherin reached for orange juice and skimmed the titles of the books on the table, surprised to see muggle resources. This is exactly why she kind of liked hanging out with Marian. She was usually up to somilky waysing unexpected. "Your brain isn't going to work any better if you abuse it like that," she offered casually, grabbing a plate and picking up some toast. "I'm sure its very resentful now. You should apologize."

James and his phoenix, Helios sat at the gryffindor table as Helios would peck at the bugs that climbed up his chair. In front of James was a small cauldron. next to his seat was and open book with the instructions for the Felix Felicis potion,Better known as liquid luck.
He smiled as he threw some of the ingredients in dodging back as flames shot up. "I think that was supposed to happen" He mumbled to the bird.
He and the bird shrugged before James stirred the liquid and it turned pink.He smile and grabbed a row of vials pouring the liquid in. Helios let out a screech before flying up above the candles and below the ceiling. James drank one of the potions smiling as he drew his wand.
"Impedimenta" He yells as Helios slowed down drastically and fell towards the ground, "Wingardium leviosa" He mumbled as the bird hovered to the ground.
James smiles "It worked" he mumbled before tapping Helios with his wand and he returned to a normal speed.
"Go again" He says to the bird.
James never got a chance to practice his way unless he was up early. The bird sqwaked flying up and over the Ravenclaw table past the girl.

Marian flinched in surprise as someone spoke, and finally registered that she wasn't alone at the table. Slowly she turned her head and squinted up at Davina from her slumped over position. "I wouldn't need to abuse it, if it wasn't such a wuss" she joked as her hand finally closed around her coffee cup. "Though I can see a revenge headache coming in my future, maybe a migraine if my brain is feeling particularly spiteful." The last part was delivered as she looked desolately into her empty mug, having straightened up to take a sip.
She eyed the table and brightened up at the sight of what looked like a new pot of fresh coffee, probably courtesy of the Hogwarts house elves. Giving in to her fate as a chronic caffeine addict she discarded her cup and simply claimed the pot for herself before taking a deep drink. "How long do you I've got until there's coffee flowing through my veins instead of blood?" Marian asked Davina, only half joking. The amount of coffee she ingested on the regular was bound to be unhealthy. Maybe she should stock up on some muggle energy drinks when she went home for Christmas? Not that they were any healthier, but it would be easier just to bring them with her for her research binges than to trek down to the kitchens every time to get coffee.
Maybe she could bounce some ideas of Davina and see if she had any ideas for how to get the result she wanted. "Hey, have yo-". The woosh of feathers interrupted her as a large bird, was that a pheonix?, flew past her and she startled violently, her coffee sloshing over the rim of the pot and onto her notes. "Oh for..! No, no, no no! Shit!" She chanted loudly as she set the pot down and her hands fluttered over her ruined notebook. Casting a quick cleaning charm she hoped that it was enough to save it, and breathed a quick sigh of relief as the only evidence of her little mishap was a few stains. She glanced at her other books to ascertain they were all alright, before pinching the bridge of her nose and taking a careful breath to calm herself.

Shaking hear head, Davina nibbled on her toast while Marian approximated her blood to be purely caffeinated. How was she even alive at this point. "Actually, at this point you're probably makings worse than making any progress. You need sleep, not coffee." This was one of few times where Davina repeating some sort of tidbit was actually welcome. Her little brothers didn't care, and most of her schoolmates were... meh. At least Marian liked to absorb any and all information in case it was useful later.
It was always interesting to see Marian go down this spiral a couple of times a year, but there was a point that was just excessive. Davina was about to give her the benefit of her advice when suddenly an oversize bird flew way to close to them. Davina ducked her head, but Marian flailed a little, knocking coffee all over her work. The Slytherin quickly got up from the bench and stepped away from the table before it dripped on her clothes. Watching the pheonix fly back to its master, Davina glared at the Gryffindor. "Oi, why would you bring your pet to the breakfast table!? It's disgusting and you almost ruined my food."
Seriously!?

He ran over being welcomed by the wrath of a girl from Slytherin. James frowned looking at the two girls worried. "Are you girls alright" He asks as the Pheonix lands on the gryffindor table cocking its head to the side.
He ignored the comment about it being gross and snuck a peak at the Ravenclaw girl's paper. "What are you working on?"He asks curious. Helios paced back and fourth on the table and then Screeched at James. "If you want me so bad come over here you seething peacock." He said to the bird. Helios flew up and then landed on his shoulder, "I'm sorry about him we needed a tighter space to practice a few combat maneuvers"
He was working on a way to make Helios a better flyer so he could use him to send letters to his mother. He pet the top of the bird's head as it chirped and nipped his finger. James smiled as he looked at the two, "Names James King" He says smiling

With her temper under control, Marian watched as Davina obviously had no compulsions about ripping the gryffindor a new one. Oh how she agreed with the slytherin, especially since it had been her research notes which had been the poor unfortunate victim of that blasted bird. Marian gave the gryffindor the stink eye as he jogged over to them. "Oh just peachy, considering I almost lost weeks of hard work." She huffed, her sleep deprivation making her even more irritable than she'd usually had been.
"You know what? Try asking me that question when you've not almost ruined my research and I might feel more inclined to answer it. " She snarked at him as she closed her notebook, and stuffed it into her bag safe from prying eyes. "At least have the decency to apologize." It was rare for her not to want to ramble about her work with anyone who was willing to listen, but her less than charitable mood and the fact that she felt like a zombie kept her from it.
She carefully filed away his name, and made a mental note to make his life hell if he ever endangered her precious notebook again. "Marian Spencer." She returned stiffly.

He held his hands up in defense. "Hey woah, sorry" He says "Helios didn't try to mess up your work. I just recommend being happy if all he did was crap on it. "Trust me when I say the teacher's mostly believe me when I say the bird burned my homework" It was obvious he was trying to stay calm. He hated being yelled at by people. It made him feel worthless.
"Helios really meant no harm, He is simply trying to improve his flying and trust me after the way I found him when I got here He needs all the flying practice he can get." The bird flapped his wings nervously before flying up towards the ceiling flying in circles above him. "sorry" He said again backing away. "Didn't mean to cause any trouble"

Combat maneuvers? What was this, medieval England? Was he defending the Monarchy? What business did he have owning such a rare creature if he was just going to treat it like a war horse? Davina didn't even attempt to stop her eyes from rolling while James explained himself. "I'm sure he didn't mean any harm," she answered him dryly, "but you are the owner and responsible for him. Try a little discretion when you just bring him into inappropriate settings... like the breakfast table." There was a reason why no one else brought their pets here. Yes, they received their owls in the Great Hall, but those were specifically trained to not crash into people... or people's food.
Davina almost forgot that Marian's work was also victim of Helios' poor flight planning and she reached to the table to try to pick some of the drenched pages apart.

"I would appreciate it if you'd talk to me like a human being" He said warningly. "I don't like being talked to like a house elf" He mumbled starting to get angry. "Like I said I'm sorry for any harm Helios may have caused just be happy he didn't do worse" He frowned as he stepped back and Helios looked at everyone now on edge.
James was getting a bit angry. One thing he did not stand for was being disrespected especially when he was coming to make sure everyone was alright. His anger was noticeable now as his face began to turn red with frustration and his nails were digging into the palms of his hands. He stepped back again hitting the table behind him. "I assure you Neither I nor Helios meant to ruin any of your work." He said walking back to the table he had been sitting at before his anger built up to much. "You don't want detention you dont want detention" He repeated to himself.
He sat down infront of his cauldron looking in. He drew his wand tapping it as it emptied. He began to pack up his things angrily but looked up at the Davina. "Should we teach her the sharpest of tongues can dull too" He asked his bird as he gripped his wand. "Langlock" He whispered as his wand flashed and a spell shot out towards Davina. If the spell was to work her tongue would glue to the roof of her mouth. If it missed... Well James was screwed.
