Friday was drawing to a close, and the Gryffindor common room was alive with excitement: students were celebrating the weekend a little early, and Caoimhe was watching the ongoing merriment from a cushy armchair by the fire, a cup of hot chocolate by her side and her copy of Children’s and Household Tales open in her lap. The library had only just closed, and the merrow was enjoying a much-needed rest; it’s not that she didn’t enjoy her job as librarian--quite the contrary, actually--but today had been rather busy for the little lioness, and she had been looking forward to the moment when she was able to kick off her shoes, put her feet up, and relax.
Tonight, she had chosen to read the story of Snow-White and Rose-Red, one of her favourites. She was just getting to the part where the half-frozen bear arrives at the cottage when she reached out to indulge in a sip of hot chocolate only to discover her cup woefully empty. The merrow glanced around the common room and wondered if anyone would be game for a little adventure to the kitchens to plunder more hot cocoa beverages; however, not wanting to interrupt anyone’s conversations, Caoimhe merely wiggled into the depths of her armchair, raised her book, and continued to read.

Olive had just finished her daily prayer to the shrine of Colin, she had added an extra tidbit about him being nicer to her because lately he seemed to be a bit ohh I dont know, like an asshole? Still it never stopped her from believing in all the love she held for him, and there was really no way she could just give him up. Not after four years of tireless devotion. An act like that would be like spitting on his face and just evidence to the fact that she never really truly did love him. WHICH WAS FALSE.
She was looking for a distraction from her melodramatic heart and found just it as she stepped down the stairs and found her strange little friend sunk so deeply into her armchair she almost didn't notice her, except for the silver white hair that poked out from behind the book.
"Kiwiiiiii" she called as she plopped onto the armrest and squeezed her friend into a hug, nuzzling her face into her whispy white hair. "I'm boooored" she whined but really what she wanted to say was distract me from my aching heart... but that was too much, even if she considered Kiwi a good friend no way would she give into sounding that desperate. 'Bored' would have to do.

The merrow flipped a page of her book, her head resting against the back of the overstuffed chair as she read. One of the common room blankets, a soft woolen thing checkered in scarlet and gold, was draped across the armchair, engulfing the majority of Caoimhe’s tiny body in its warm embrace. Her feet, encased in fuzzy slippers, bounced against the side of the chair.
“Kiwiiiiii, I’m booooooored.”
Without warning, a red-headed flurry of snuggles landed in Caoimhe’s lap, causing the librarian to let out a frightened cry; upon realizing what had happened, the merrow collapsed into a rush of giggles and wrapped her arms around her friend’s shoulders, pulling Olive close as the fourth year buried her head into Caoimhe’s hair.
“I am thinking of going an adventure. Will that be erasing your boredom fast enough?”

"Adventure?" she popped her head up with interest. This was just what she was looking for, this was why she loved Kiwi. No matter how weird she spoke, she understood her and her needs. And as any Gryffindor, adventure was in her blood. She craved it, the distraction, and also the fun. She grinned to herself, wondering what Kiwi had in mind. She hadn't known her for very long, Kiwi had kind of dropped in last year out of what seemed to be thin air. Everyone said she was a transfer student but from where no one seemed to know. She spoke weird so she guessed somewhere in the balkans, Durmstrang perhaps? Olive didn't know much about the Balkans or Durmstrang but she did know that wherever she had come from it wasn't here.
Not that it mattered to her anyway. Kiwi was pretty cool as far as she was concerned. Although Olive worried that she worked too hard sometimes a bit unnecessarily, like her job at the library. But again, she passed it as a difference in cultures and maybe that kind of lifestyle was normal for her?
Whatever. That didn't matter. The adventure mattered. And she was intrigued. "yes DUH of course I'm game to 'erase' my boredom" she added, using Kiwis form of speech and prodded her arm lightly "Spill it, It's drivin me mad. What'd you have in mind?"

“Adventure?”
Caoimhe nodded as her friend echoed the suggestion she’d made. The merrow shifted her weight in the chair, her ethereally white hair shimmering like a rainbow in a waterfall as she nuzzled further into the armchair to give Olive had more room beside her.
"yes DUH of course I'm game to 'erase' my boredom. Spill it, It's drivin me mad. What'd you have in mind?"
“I am thinking,” Caoimhe began, amethyst eyes stealing a glance at her empty teacup, “we are bringing our teacups to the kitchens, like so, and then we are getting the elves to make us hot cocoa, yes? They are most delighted for visitors, those elves.”
The librarian stretched, placing one of her unusually long fingers between the pages of her book as she folded its covers closed. Usually, she could just whisper a soft command at her enchanted tea cup and watch as it filled itself with her order, but the more she thought about it, the more delight she took in the idea of visiting the elves; she hadn’t seen her friends in well over a week, and it would be nice to relax amidst their calming energy as they worked the kitchens.
“Do you have a cup ready for the adventure?”

Olive's mouth gaped a bit. The kitchens? Hogwarts had kitchens?? and elves at that? Whaaaaat??? Was Kiwi just messing with her? Her eyes narrowed into thin slits and she stared at her friend suspiciously, trying to get anything from her to say LOL jk... but she didn't. Kiwi was being completely and totally sincere. She'd never have guessed.Part of her had always assumed the food that appeared on the tables of the great hall just kind of appeared by magic. Like POOF chocolate cake. She didn't know there were people.. no creatures preparing the food.
How did Kiwi know about this place when she had only just came in last year?
Whatever. She couldn't wait to go there, she didn't even know what to expect. She'd never met a houseelf before, her parents didn't have any. And none of their friends did either. It seemed like a class thing and her parents and their friends were mostly pretty average households. How did they even use magic? She wondered. Now excited at meeting an elf..
"No... WAIT.. Hold on" Olive shuffled out of the armchair and pat her body down trying to locate her wand. Somewhere.. somewhere... got it she pulled out her wand from her back pocket, something her mom had often digressed about and then cleared her throat.
"I got this! accio mug" she waved her wand in the air and thought of her wonderful Colin mug she had created over winter break. The Colin on the mug moved and winked, smiled and occasionally gave kissy faces. They were all a creation of her own doing, a little tweaking of magic to create a photo that looked more real to her visions. The scarlet mug came whizzing down the stairs faster than she anticipated and she ducked just in time to avoid getting hit smack in the head with it, as a result the mug collided against the wall and shattered into little large pieces over the fireplace.
"Ah crap. I knew I'd fudge that one up" Olive walked over to the shattered pieces and looked at them ruefully. Deciding it was beyond repair she turned to Kiwi and asked, "you think the elves'll lend me a mug? This one's just beyond the scope of my limited repair skills" she smiled sheepishly, having never quite acquired a knack for charms.

An electric buzz of excitement wiggled through the merrow’s veins as her housemate prepared for their departure. Not only was Olive as jazzed about adventure as Caoimhe was, but the younger lioness seemed just as enthusiastic, too; the enchanted mug flew straight for them and both girls ducked in unison. Caoimhe winced as the sound of shattering pottery exploded behind her.
Perhaps Olive a little too enthusiastic.
“Those elves are having most anything,” Caoimhe assured her friend as they both stared at the mug-mess that had covered a good portion of the common room floor. “They are also fixing most anything if you are wanting your cup back together again.”
“I don’t like this idea of yours one bit,” Finn spoke up, his curmudgeon voice ringing loud and clear into Caoimhe’s left ear, where his tiny fishbowl earring hung dutifully from her earlobe. The koi fish, unable to be heard by anyone save his charge, was stoutly against the little merrow sharing the pieces of her life that were created to cover up the fact that she was not, in fact, a human. “Regular students are never admitted into the kitchens.”
“Admitted, no,” countered Lapp the turtle from his own enchanted fishbowl dangling from Caoimhe’s right earlobe. “But you’re crazy if you think kids aren’t sneaking in there, man. I mean, come on. The place is prime snack-land!”
Caoimhe shook her head and tried to ignore the bickering of her guardians. She had already made up her mind about taking Olive to the kitchens, and she was nothing if not stubborn. Plus, her fellow housemate had never given her cause for worry, and they were both so bored, and…
“I am ready if you are!” the merrow declared, wriggling off the armchair and pulling the blanket across her shoulders like a cape. “Let us be going for our adventure!”

Upon hearing that it was possible that her mug could be saved, she did a silent cheer and began scooping up tiny broken pieces and carefully depositing them into her robes. Olive hard hardly noticed the commotion going on between Kiwi's fish friends, she didn't even notice that they were real living breathing fish. She'd always assumed they were just decoration, a cute bit of magic to make earrings pop. Once she finished picking up the last piece, she dropped it into her pocket and rose to her feet, brushing her hands free of any dust she might have picked up in the process.
"Great, I'm all done here." she stated and turned to kiwi, who pulled her blanket over her shoulders. "Oh I hope the elves fan fix it, what should I give them as payment? Do they like chocolate?" she piped, already missing those loving looks that mug Colin gave. Those beautiful browns that stared back at her ever morning and night. The charming smile, the coy winks. Olive sighed dreamily.. Mug Colin sometimes felt more real than real Colin, whom as a result of age had turned into a moody teenager.
Mug Colin merely provided the support and encouragement she so desperately needed. "Which way is it anyway" she asked, as she followed behind kiwi. She couldn't even imagine where the kitchens could be, or how big it was. Perhaps it was somewhere behind the great hall? No.. she'd have noticed it if that were the case. Hmm..

“The elves are not wanting any chocolates,” Caoimhe gasped, a hard edge creeping into her words; the momentary seriousness set a rigid tone to an otherwise ethereally content voice. “They are just wanting to help and if you are insisting on paying them then they are just getting upset and are crying many sad things. You have to be promising you are not to be giving them anything in exchange for hot chocolates.”
She smiled to take the sting from her words, hooking her little finger around the handle of her teacup to ensure a safe voyage from Gryffindor Tower to the kitchens. Then, satisfied that her cup was safe, she nodded to herself, adjusting the blanket around her shoulders so she could accommodate Olive should the younger lioness desire it.
“Which way is it anyway?”
“You are not knowing?” the merrow questioned, shuffling around peculiarly in an attempt to disentangle her arm without dropping her teacup; finally, after a few moment’s struggle, she managed to free her hand from the fuzzy confines of the blanket. Caoimhe turned to her friend, arm held behind her and her alabastrine fingers stretched long and inviting for Olive to take. “Not to be worrying, my Olive Greene. I can be showing you where the elves are living and they will be fixing you your special Colin Mug and you are not even having to pay them.”

Olive's eyes widened slightly, completely taken aback by the sudden change in tone from her normally rather sweet and quaint friend. It was vicious and harsh and just.. ow. She could almost feel the daggers splinter in her heart. She stood frozen.. paralyzed for a moment like a deer caught in headlights until she knew it was safe to do anything else. The smile that appeared on kiwi's lips moments later reassured her that she could well. ya know.. speak. "I SWEAR on it!" she insisted, and pressed a hand to her heart and rose the other one at her side as if she were being sworn in by a judicial court, the only thing missing was the bible. When Kiwi lifted her blanket to make room for Olive she knew things were okay with them and readily accepted the invitation, slipping in beside her fair skinned friend. But why did she act that way? What was the reason for the tone of voice? Surely an elf crying wasn't worth breaking your mates neck over was it? Unless ... Yes.. she thought to herself curiously.. unless there was more to it. Like.. like... something drastic perhaps not devastating but just.. just.. like. Like... they'd grow to be five feet tall. Or a.. they lost their eternal servitude?? Or quite possibly they just imploded from shock at being rewarded for their services. She gaped.... trying to imagine what that would look like. An imploded elf...Did St. Mungos have a cleanup division of that sort? Olive made a mental note to research on it.. or you know.. test it out. She couldn't help herself. Anything anyone started with ' NO' her brain rebelled against the idea of being told what not to do. "no I'm not knowing. I mean.. I don't know." she replied. "Up until now I didn't even know Hogwarts had elves.... how did you find out anyway?" she asked curiously spying her friend. Perhaps Caoimhe had already tested out imploding house elves. After all, she'd not only known where they lived but also knew what not to do. hmmmm...

With Olive’s promise fresh off her lips, Caoimhe headed off, leading her friend through the portrait hole and down the hallway. There was a secret passage on the fourth floor that would lead them to the second; from there, they would journey down the basement staircase and into a series of hallways, one of which housed the Hufflepuff common room and, more importantly, the kitchens.
“I am just knowing,” was all Caoimhe would say on the matter as she and Olive tiptoed awkwardly through the castle corridors, stumbling into each other every now and then from under the confines of the blanket. “I thought everyone was knowing about the elves. I made friends with them and now they like to give me hot chocolates.”
The journey was a long one, but the little merrow didn’t mind the wander as long as she had her housemate by her side.
“Careful to be watching where you put your feet,” Caoimhe instructed as she led Olive through a tapestry that covered the fourth floor’s secret passage. Beyond the tapestry was a narrow dusty staircase, the steps barely noticeable in the flickering light of the wall scones. “There is being a step on the one side that you are jumping if you are not wanting to get your feet stuck.”
True to her word, the little merrow pointed to a section of stairs before sidestepping the trick step, going slow to ensure Olive would follow suit and not, as the older lioness stated, get her feet stuck.
“This is being better than sitting in the Tower without hot chocolates, yes?” Caoimhe asked of her friend. She wanted to make sure Olive was having fun, after all, and not wishing she was back in the common room. “You will be liking the elves, I am thinking. They are funny and little and just the thing to fix our boredom.”

Olive followed Caoimhe dutifully, she tried to remember the passage they took but there were so many turns here and there. It impressed her how much her strange friend knew when she'd only appeared just out of the blue. For a brief and fleeting moment she couldn't help but get the feeling that she'd wasted four whole years making a vie for Colin's love rather than doing what normal kids did, like.. exploring the castle. Was it really a waste of time though she wondered. NEVER. One could always look at a castle, but could they look into the eyes of an angel?? Could they swear they'd been apart of their true loves one and only calling of being the greatest quidditch player in the universe? NAY~! Besides.. there was always time to explore the castle.. she still had three more years and happened to be friends with Kiwi who already got the castle down to a T. She was aiight. "Yeah I know that bloody thing, got me every time for three years before I got it mentally engraved" Olive hopped over trick step, now that she'd been acquainted with many times. "I could skip it even in my sleep" Olive grinned to herself and couldn't help but imagine how strange the elves must if Kiwi thought they were strange. Up until this point olive could think of no other person stranger than Kiwi herself except maybe the Headmaster, who she could swear was maybe a little oh I don't know.. insane. "Yeah I bet I will, I like you just fine so the elves should be a walk in the park" she added jokingly.
